Elizabethan Hair- Frizz/Crimped Hair

I chose these two portraits of Elizabeth as they show the crimped hair well compared to the other portraits. Looking at the portrait on the left hand side, I noticed that there are no jewels used apart from the hair ruff at the back of the head. However, a very historical feature is present which is the middle parting. Whereas on the portrait on the the right side along with the crimped hair there are also pearls in the hair which are a symbol of the queen's purity.

Looking at some films that have portrayed Elizabeth I came across this image. This image is taken from the movie Shakespeare in Love and Judi Dench portrayed the character of Elizabeth in the movie. The crimped hair grabbed my attention as it looks very Elizabethan along with all the jewels used as decorations in the hair. The high hair line with no eyebrows is a historical feature of that era as well as it represents wealth and status. Veronica Brebnar was the hair and makeup artist for the film. Another feature that really caught my eye were the peacock feathers used as a ruff. A peacock is known to be a very prestigious bird and this could be referenced to the the queens status and power.
