Above are a few portraits of Elizabeth 1 that show the use of curls in Elizabethan hairstyles. The portrait on the top of the page, demonstrates the use small tight curls. They almost look like really tight perms. However, the two images at the bottom show tight curls and loose curls left hanging down. In the Rainbow portrait on the left, the loose curls have the texture and appearance of zig zag curls that have been loosened and pulled apart.
