Practical: Curls
Health and Safety:
- Make sure there are no trailing wires which could cause a hazard.
- Keep bags and objects under the working area.
- Make sure all electrical equipment has been switched off after being used and stored away safely.
- Make sure all appropriate PPE is worn.
Spiral Curls-Curler Upright
sectioning clips.
Start curling from the bottom of the scalp.
Take the tips of the hair and roll the hair onto the curler till the roots.
To get the spiral effect keep the curler in an upward vertical direction.
Hold the hair for about twelve to twenty seconds and release the curl.
Roll the curl into a barrel curl and pin it in place.
This will cool the hair and allow the curls to set.
Spiral Curls-Curler Sideways
sections.
Start curling from the bottom of the scalp.
To get more volume at the roots hold the curler in a horizontal direction.
Wrap the tips of the hair round the curler and roll on the rest of the hair till the roots.
Hold the hair in place util you feel its hot enough for about twenty seconds.
When releasing the curl, roll it into a barrel curl and pin it to the scalp.
This will cool the hair and allow the curls to set.
Evaluation
For this particular practical session I divided the hair into two parts. I did spiral curls on both sides of the head using different techniques on ether side. While I was doing the curls over the barrel curls that were setting I noticed how they were getting pressed by the curler. I thought this would spoil the shape of the curl. However, next time when I create these curls I will be careful not to lean the curler over the curls that are setting. After curling the whole head I let the curls cool down and set for some time. I then removed all the pins from the curls and loosely went through them with my fingers to open them up.
This is what the curls looked like once I loosely pulled them down. I was pleased with the outcome as this was my first time trying out spiral curls using two different techniques. I saw that the spiral curls on the right side of the head had more volume at the roots than the ones on the left. This is because the curler was kept in a horizontal direction. This brings more oomph to the curls. On the other hand the curls on the left side of the head no volume at the roots. However, the curls looked like corkscrew curls and had a little more volume at the ends. Linking this to the Elizabethan era, they had a lot of volume in their hair. Wavy curls could be used to set the hair and create that volume as well as crimping. There is only one way to test this out, Practice!
