Practical: Hairstyle with Adornments

During the practical studio session I attempted to create an Elizabethan hairstyle using adornments. Looking at Images from the Elizabethan Era, most hairstyles had a heart shape from the front and a braid or a bun at the back. I tried to create a heart shape in the front.

To do this I parted the hair into two sections from the front and had a middle parting. I then backcombed the hair to get more volume at the front. Next I twisted the hair on each side into a small puff and pinned it at the back of the head.

At the back of the head I created a french plait and incorporated the left over hair from the puffs into it. I added a white ribbon as an adornment to the braid. I chose white as a contrast color so that it would stand out in the braid. I tucked the braid into the french plait at the back. This would give a more sophisticated look.

As I created the hairstyle above using ribbon as an adornment, I thought I would reference it back to how ribbons were used to decorate the hair in the Elizabethan Era. The image above is taken from the scene in which Queen Elizabeth states that she is no man's woman and is taken from the movie Elizabeth by Shekhar Kapur.

Evaluation
I wasn't really pleased with the end result of how the hair looked from the front because it looked flat and had no volume at all. In my opinion crimping the hair would boost the hair with a lot of volume and it would be easy to mold the hair into the desired shape.

I was pleased with the look of the full hairstyle from the side in the picture on the right hand side above. However, I feel that I could have made the french plait more neat and tight.
